This innovation solved the problem of transporting hundreds of students to and from Hogwarts every year without attracting Muggle attraction. Muggles helped move the train onto the tracks. In order to acquire the train , the Ministry of Magic used Muggle railway employees as man power, then performed Memory Charms to fix their memories. The move also required the largest Concealment Charm ever performed in Britain.

Some pure-blood families weren't initially into the idea of traveling by train. Their prejudice against Muggles led them to believe it was unsafe and unsanitary, and they refused to board. Eventually, the Ministry decreed that students were required to arrive by train. It has an official name.

A conductor once described the train as a " Hall Class steam locomotive model number GWR ," calling it "quite impressive. Prior to the development of the Hogwarts Express, some students traveled to school by Portkey. The Express dutifully carried students to and from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at the start and end of every term.

It also made the run back again to London at the end of term in June. As we know from early historical accounts, and from the evidence of early woodcuts and engravings, Hogwarts students used to arrive at school in any manner that caught their fancy. In , [2] the Ministry of Magic conducted a large-scale operation involving one hundred and sixty-seven Memory Charms , as well as the biggest Concealment Charm ever performed in Britain, in order to acquire the locomotive.

The morning after this operation, the residents of Hogsmeade awoke to find the gleaming red Hogwarts Express and a Hogsmeade railway station that had not been there previously, and the Muggle railway employees in Crewe had the feeling they had misplaced something, which stayed with them for the rest of the year.
