Court records and sources familiar with the federal investigation offer insight into the final months of the year-old rapper, real name Rodney Yeargin, who gained local fame within the music industry while striving for mainstream success. The status of the federal investigation was unclear Thursday. Drug dealing and the rap industry have overlapped in high-profile federal investigations locally in recent years.
Though the full scope of the DEA investigation was unclear Thursday, sources familiar with the probe said federal agents stopped Yeargin on Feb. The money was seized because investigators believed the cash either was going to be used to buy drugs or linked to a drug deal, Assistant Oakland County Prosecutor Anne Gabbert wrote in a court filing. Gabbert filed a lawsuit to have the money forfeited to Oakland County in April.
The case is pending and is being handled in Oakland County because the DEA task force detective involved in the seizure works for Waterford Township Police.
In this case, Land said, Yeargin fought from the to get-go to get his money back and insisted it was legitimate music money that was lawfully earned. He came to my office and thought it was very unfair," Land said, adding legitimate drug dealers don't act like that. They just want to stay under the radar. Land, who is 51, noted that he didn't know who Yeargin was when he came to his office for legal help.
But his young son was in his office that day and quickly let him in on client's fame. Land said the last time he spoke with Yeargin was about a week ago. The two had spoken on the phone and he told Yeargin to compile his documentation to prove that he was buying a car in Arizona.
But on Monday afternoon, while sitting in a white Hyundai on Detroit's west side, someone fired multiple shots and killed Yeargin. Yeargin was a member of Doughboyz Cashout, a local hip hop group that never broke into the mainstream or landed a major radio hit. But Roc and his group were stars in their own right.
